VCC's HMC panel lens has been designed to display printed circuit board mounted 10mm LEDs. The unique feature of the HMC low-profile lens is its special threads. Each mating component is designed with six single-entity threads. The six individual threads allow for multiple mating entry points between the lens and the retaining ring. In addition, the amount of rotation required to secure the assembly is only a one-half turn. HMC mating components have a unique thread cross-section design that eliminates over-tightening- a typical cause of thread stripping of plastic mating parts. Any attempt to over-tighten the HMC will result in the retaining ring sliding into a previous thread without damaging either component. The unit can then be retightened to a secure position. The assembly is installed by hand, eliminating the necessity of tools. A specifically designed compression seal serves to provide both moisture and dust protection for the HMC.

 

Tests have been conducted by an independent environmental laboratory. The lens and retaining systems were subjected to vibration from 0 to 2000 Hz with shock up to 6 G's. UV, solar and operating temperature tests from -40° to +105°C were also performed. The conclusions attained upon completion of these tests were that the HMC 461 lens exceeded all the standard test criteria.

 

The HMC consists of button-type lenses .620" in diameter designed for mounting both 8mm and 10mm These lenses have a smooth, clean look with a convex shaped surface protruding a mere .140" above the panel. The balance of the assembly consists of an internal tooth lock-washer and retaining ring. Installation is accomplished by inserting the lens through a 9/16" panel opening. Slide the lock-washer over the lens threads; the installation is completed by rotating the retaining ring one-half turn by hand to its fully secure position. This allows the PCB-mounted LED to be moved easily into or out of the lens. The circuit board is now completely independent of the display panel, simplifying its installation or removal for assembly or repair. The integrity of the sealing lens remains intact.

 

The HMC greatly increases the aesthetics of the display panel and when lighted, provides a smooth, evenly lighted surface. With their use, the viewing angle of a 10mm LED is increased up to 180 degrees in both low ambient light or direct sunlight conditions. These increases in viewing angle are the result of the convex shaped lens in conjunction with Fresnel rings. When using a tri-color LED, the third color appears evenly mixed with no single color hot spots.

 

The HMC low-profile button-type lenses are of optical quality, U.L. listed, polycarbonate thermoplastic. It is offered in six colors including red, amber, green yellow, blue and water clear. The compression seal and the retaining ring are of U.L. listed thermoplastic materials.
